Wooden Fences vs. Vinyl Fences

Which Is Better For You?

Are you planning to put some wooden fences around your yard? Here are a few things to think about when deciding between vinyl and wood fencing.

Vinyl fences are very durable. They will not rot or crack, and they are weather resistant. But wood fencing can be a good choice as well. Wood tends to blend in with flowers, grasses and trees better than vinyl, especially if you don't paint the wood. Wooden fences cost less than vinyl fencing and the wood is biodegradable.

There are several design applications to consider. In addition to the species of wood, you will have to decide on height of the fence, style, location, the surrounding landscape, and whether or not you will need access (opening or gate). If you know you will need to bring a lawn tractor or other large equipment from one side of the fence to the other, and you definitely want a gate, you might need a double gate.

Will you be integrating with an arbor? Will it add interest if you combine two different styles of wooden fences? If you live within the realm of a homeowner's association, there might be restrictions on what you can do. Check it out.

Regarding the style of the fence, there are several standard models to choose from. If you have questions about which style works best in your particular situation, discuss it with the supplier. He will have insights that only come from experience. Furthermore, if you decide you want a custom design to your wood fencing, he will help you come up with an appropriate design, based on the materials that work best for you.

If custom fencing is your choice, wooden fences will be your best option. Wood is much easier to cut to specific sizes and shapes than vinyl fencing. It's also easier to find the raw materials for a wood fence.

If you don't plan to change your landscaping again for at least 5 years, vinyl will probably be cheaper because wood will require more maintenance and (depending on the wood species) won't stand up as well to weather. The exceptions are Teak and Epi - but these are much more expensive than your typical maple and cedar fences.

Have you thought about what kind of "look" you want in your yard? If you prefer "natural" or "rustic", then wood fencing is your obvious choice. Vinyl has not perfected the "wood look" yet. From a distance, vinyl seems to have the same texture as wood, but when you get close, wood looks and feels different.

If you want a painted fence, and you're thinking about putting it up yourself, vinyl is the way to go. Vinyl fencing comes pre-finished. The color is impregnated into the vinyl, so it won't show minor scratches.

If you're concerned about the environment, wooden fences are the best option. You can buy vinyl fencing that contains recycled materials, and you can take vinyl fencing to a recycling center if you chose to replace it. However, wood can not only be recycled, it is biodegradable - no carbon footprint.

Choosing the right fencing is an important decision for any homeowner. A good fence can improve curb appeal and give your backyard added privacy. Whether you choose vinyl or wood, make sure you determine your property lines accurately, measure correctly, and follow installation instructions carefully when installing yourself. Enjoy your new fence.
