Wine Rack Design

There are many things that go into finding the best wine rack design for your home. You want the design to be both utilitarian and good looking. You will find that the market is full of many designs and so with a little effort, you can find something that will make you happy.

The role of a wine rack is basically to store wine bottles. So keep in mind that (in this case) form follows function. Measure the available space, and determine the amount of wine you want to keep stored in these racks.

Shapes and Sizes

There are individual coop racks, large diamond-shaped racks, and multi-bottle square or rectangular racks. All of these can be found in stock, but they all have pre-determined dimensions. If your space dictates that you need an unusual size rack, you can get it custom made.

Wine rack designs do not have to be too extensive. All that is really needed is a style, type of material and color to create the look you want.

Small racks look great in small interior spaces. Large wine racks look fantastic in homes with large pantries, basements or walk-in closets.

Materials include many species of wood, as well as several metal finishes. An accent piece (like a riddler rack) is something that will add interest to your wine rack design.

Amount of Wine

It makes perfect sense to purchase the wine rack that can accommodate the approximate number of wine bottles in your collection. Thus, if you just have 5 to 12 bottles and you have no desire to expand it in the near future, then a countertop model is the best (and cheapest) rack for you.

But if your wine collection is nearing a hundred or so bottles, then a large wall-mounted rack, or free-standing rack, is the most logical choice. If you are unsure of the direction your small collection will be taking, you should consider stackable wine racks that allow for future expansion.

What Material to Use

You have many choices in materials for racks. Wooden racks lend a classic feel with warm tones, while metal racks can either look traditional, or add a contemporary touch to the space.

It is worth noting that none of these materials are considered better than any of the others. It's strictly a matter of your preference.

The important thing with wine racks is that the design allows for good air circulation and good angles so that the wine remains in a position that allows the wine to be in contact with the cork.

This keeps the oxygen out of the bottle by always keeping the cork moist. As such, oxidation will not happen, thereby preserving the wine's taste.

The racks should be kept in a place that is cool and dark with some humidity. Although the bottles are dark-colored to ward off light damage, it is still advisable for the wines to be stored in darkness.

Design Considerations

Last but not least, you should consider the decorative qualities of the racks. Since these racks will become part of the décor in the house, you should ensure that they blend with your furniture and fixtures.

Another aspect which is extremely important is it's location. In case you want it to be in the living room, for example, you will need to have it a bit more ornate and presentable than when the wine is tucked into a kitchen cabinet.

Most people prefer wine rack designs that attract attention and are displayable. (Is that a word?) This is because most of the people who collect wine, love to share their joy with the rest of the world.
