Washer-Dryer Combos

HOW TO CHOOSE = Stacked Washer-Dryer Combos come 2 ways – an all-in-one unit called a laundry center, and a separate dryer mounted on top of a front-loading washer. Another option is to get a unit that washes and dries in the same drum. These are all good ways to save space.
If you prefer the separate dryer mounted on a washer, make sure the machines you buy are labeled as “stackable”. Safety is an issue here. You’ll need a staking kit, and watch out that the height of the dryer door is easy to reach after stacking.
Laundry centers are easier to reach than stacked units, but they have smaller capacities, and offer fewer features. The all-in-one washer-dryer can be used without venting or a 220-volt power supply.
This makes it a great choice for apartment living. On the negative side, these all-in-one units have smaller capacity, may take a couple of hours to finish a load, and are more prone to breakdowns.
Front-loading washers use less water and electricity than top-loaders. They spin faster, removing more water from clothing and cutting drying time.
They are easier on garments and use smaller amounts of detergents. A moisture sensor is a good option to ask for. It will automatically shut the machine off when the clothes are dry.
A gas dryer is preferred to an electric dryer (if you have the option) because the gas dryers are cheaper to run and dry a little quicker. Smaller models (24” wide) are usually only electric, but larger models usually come either way.
Make sure you measure your space before shopping. Check the clearance for electric cords and exhaust duct, doorways and other potential obstructions. Be sure to have the 240-volt outlet nearby.
THE REVIEW = The Best Laundry Center is the Frigidaire GLEH1642F. Reviews indicate that this unit washes as well as conventional models. It has an efficient full-size front-loading washer, and a moisture sensor.
Controls for both washer and dryer are mounted in the center of the unit. One drawback is a loud buzzer when finished. This combo unit is listed at $880.
