Upholstered Headboards

Although wooden headboards are much more common, upholstered headboards (in my opinion) are much more versatile and can be used to compliment several different decore schemes.

With a plain bedspread and neutral wall color, the headboard can be a perfect place to add a print. Pick fabric that blends in with the wall tone and bedspread for an elegant look.

Or for a bolder statement, try a bright contrasting color. The large print in the fabric here breaks up a serene, monochromatic gray palette.

A checkered quilt is used as a ceiling-high headboard in this master bedroom. A curvaceous distressed Swedish antique bench positioned at the foot of the bed and a dangling chandelier give the room a casually elegant air.

Pastel colors are a popular choice for cottage-style rooms, but richer colors can also create a cozy feel. Chocolate brown, warm gold, and white with touches of rose create an inviting color palette in this cottage bedroom. Floral sheets antique screens and mounted to the wall make a unique look and feel for the headboard.

Below, a taupe and cream color palette creates a calming setting. Painting the chandelier and mirror frame a creamy shade helps the accents blend in with the decor. Beige bedding gives the room an easy elegance. To add interest, patterns were used sparingly -- toile covers the headboard and windows while floral throw pillows add spots of color to the room

As you can see, upholstery on headboards is extremely versatile. They are also not very expensive.

All you need is some imagination and a good feel for the look you want to give your bedroom. To see more photos showing unique headboards, go to the bhg website and search for headboards.

Design Tip: Swing-arm sconces provide convenient lighting for a bedtime read while freeing up night-table space. If wall-mounted is not for you, search for lights with clips that you can attach to your headboard.
