Is A Steam Shower For You?
Many people are under the impression that a steam shower (or bath) is a relatively modern idea. The truth is that steam baths date back almost 5,000 years and were often used by the elite among the ancient Greeks, as well as the Romans.
The most noticeable benefit of a steam shower is the way it relaxes your muscles. It's also said to be beneficial for people suffering with arthritis, and of course, it helps sore athletes feel better. Steam heat will reduce the discomfort of sore muscles and give you more flexibility.
A steam, or a sauna (heat without the humidity), also helps most respiratory ailments - especially asthma or allergies. The heat from the steam will open up passages to your lungs and make it much easier to breathe. Even though the environment within the shower is moist, the moisture combined with the heat helps the bronchial tubes to expand.
Since you perspire during a steam shower, any dirt or other residue is excreted from your skin, allowing it to breathe. This all results in a little "glow" as well as an improved metabolic rate
Although these showers are more affordable than they were 10 years ago, they will still put a good dent in your bank account. However, if you include a steam generating unit as part of a bathroom remodeling project, the additional cost may not be a factor in your overall budget (depending on the model you select).
If you wish, you can convert your existing shower into a steam unit. This will probably run $2,000 or more, depending on the field conditions, the options you choose, and how much work is involved for your contractor.
There a several models and lots of upgrades. For example, if you cannot part with your bathtub and don't have the room to devote to a separate shower and bathtub, then you could opt for the steam showers and hydro-massage bath all in one. With this system you can have the luxury of massaging jets, and a steam, all in the space of a bathtub.
In addition to the proven health benefits, the steam experience will also refresh your mind and melt away stress and fatigue. Bonus - you can burn up to 600 calories in a fifteen minute steam bath or shower.
