Sliding Patio Doors

One of the first things to consider before installing sliding patio doors is the immediate surroundings of the proposed location. Are there many steps? Is there enough width for a 6 ft. door, or will it have to be a 5 ft. door? Keep in mind that a 5 ft. door gives you an opening of a little more than 2 feet.

It's difficult to get trays of food and table-wear through such a slim opening. Since a 5 foot door is not a good option, and there isn't room for larger doors, you might consider a pair of French Doors instead.

Very often glass sliding patio doors are fitted to facilitate an attractive view and access to a garden either from a lounge or dining area, or from the kitchen. This can enhance your property and add value to your home.

Consider that the amount of foot traffic may increase regarding extra wear and tear on your dining room or kitchen flooring. If you are replacing a conventional hinged door with a glass patio door think through the logistics of which way the door will slide in relation to walls and furniture.

Think about how the sun-light in the room will be affected and how the sun can fade carpets and furnishings, so you may need solar coated glass or blinds.

Once you have thought through your patio door positioning, you need to pay a visit to you local suppliers. Have a look at what they have to offer and very often they will have a leaflet that will give you information to help you make your decision.

Have a good chat with an enlightened retailer about product range. It is also important to consider security when you finally decide on your sliding patio doors. So, do your research before spending your money.

OK, so you've made your decision. You know where the door is going, and you know what you want to buy. Bear in mind that installing a glass patio door is not a one man job, nor a job for the typical homeowner without carpentry skills. You will need help - and I don't mean asking your five year old to pass you the hammer.

I mean hire a professional, or enlist the help of friends or family that have done this before. Their main purpose may be muscle power and making tea, but they have to know enough about installing sliding patio doors to give you proper instructions.

Well you are ready, you know where the patio door is going, you have the patio door, you have all the necessary tools and you have the help. You will soon have your new glass patio door fitted and it will look terrific.
