Safety Gates For Stairs
Safety gates for stairs are an inexpensive way to keep your baby from tumbling down the stairs or making his way into areas that are not safe. Safety gates give you peace of mind by keeping your little explorer in one area of the home.
There are two types of safety gates. Hardware-mounted gates require tools to install, while pressure gates use pressure bars to remain in place.

Pressure gates are easier to assemble and cheaper to buy. Hardware-mounted gates cost more, take more time to install and, therefore, are sturdier than pressure gates.
Your baby's weight can eventually topple the gate. If possible, bolt your gate into the wall. Be sure the bolts are in a stud so they don't just crumple the sheet rock.
Hardware-mounted gates are best at the top of the stairs; most will only swing open in one direction, usually away from the stairs. Pressure gates are best used in less-dangerous areas as room separators.
Avoid baby safety gates with horizontal slats, which could invite the child to climb. Gates should have less than 3 inches between vertical slats or bars.
When shopping for safety gates for stairs, select one that is safety-certified. Look for packages with the letters ASTM or JPMA.

Safety gates should block both the bottom and top of the stairs. Climbing the stairs offers your baby just as many dangers as falling from the top.
Always latch the gate. All it takes is one time to forget or run down the stairs for your baby to fall. If you have older children, this rule might require constant reminders.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, tens of thousands of injuries each year result from baby walkers and stairs. Regardless of the baby gate, do not let your child near the stairs in a walker.
A baby gate does not make up for your supervision. Keeping a constant eye on your baby is the only proven method for her safety.
Features To Look For
One-hand release allows you to open and lock a gate with one hand. This is great for times when you are carrying a baby (and that is sure to be often).
Dual-direction swinging allows you to open the safety gate in either direction (non-stair applications only).
Expandable safety gates can fit doorways and openings of different sizes. Extension kits allow gates to expand to fit openings larger than standard-size doorways and windows.
See-through safety gates allow you full vision of baby.
Installation kits help in mounting safety gates on various surfaces.
Safety gates come in various materials that complement any décor--wooden, plastic-coated steel, and soft mesh.
