Cast Iron Register Covers

What is the difference between vent covers, register covers, and grilles?

Most homes are heated and cooled by central forced air systems that consist of a furnace, an air conditioning unit, and ductwork. Warmed air from the furnace (winter) or cooled air from the air conditioner (summer) is delivered to the rooms in your home through forced air ducts.

Vent Covers

A vent is an opening that allows air to pass. In this case, a vent allows air to pass between the room and duct.

A vent cover is a generic term used to describe the decorative cover on the vent (i.e., duct opening). Register covers are specific types of vent covers that are typically used on forced air ducts.

They have a pre-attached damper or set of louvers to help control airflow. For example, the damper can be closed to avoid heating or cooling a room that isn’t used. Grilles are vent covers that are normally used on air return ducts.

Grilles do not have a pre-attached damper. Louver assemblies can be used with grilles so that the grilles can be used on forced air ducts and still provide airflow control.

Determine the correct size before you order

Registers are selected by the size of the opening that they fit. If necessary, remove the existing grille or register to expose the duct opening. The width and length of the opening should match the width and length of the inside measurements of the register, or louver assembly.

Outside measurements will be larger than the opening. Be careful not to rely on outside measurements to select your replacement vent cover.

Inside measurements of the register should match the measurements of the opening to ensure a proper fit. If the register will be near a wall, cabinet, or other obstruction, measure the area to make sure you will have enough room to accommodate the overall size (outside measurement) of the grille or register.

Cast Iron Registers

When replacing the register covers in your home you want to take two important factors into account – quality and design. Cast iron register covers are a wonderful way to update with high quality material that will stand the test of time while also introducing classic patterns into any room.

While most popular in the late 1890’s through early 1900’s, cast iron register covers are an excellent way to ensure you are updating your home with registers that can withstand large amounts of weight and will not dent or become damaged under normal wear and tear.

The biggest issue with floor registers is how well they´ll stand up to foot traffic; people walking near them, on them and over them. Some registers crack or crumble on the first step. These would be the cheap, big box penny registers you should never waste your money on.

Cast iron registers are available in a wide variety of sizes and designs. Most typically featuring ornate swirl patterns or geometric Victorian designs which will accent any room and can help create or enhance current decorating themes.

A register comes with directional louvers while a grill does not. If you do not require louvers you may want to consider a grill as a less expensive option.

Finally, ask if the register you have selected is available with mount holes if you are installing it on a wall. While floor mounted registers do not need mount holes (they can be used for added stability if desired), wall mounted registers will need to be screwed to keep them in place.

Cast iron register covers are readily available online as well as in many home decorating magazines. When you work with cast iron home hardware you can be sure that you are introducing classic designs into your home.

Other registers will hold up to some foot traffic but not without scratching or chipping. Many wood registers are like this as well as some registers made of aluminum or very thin steel.

Registers made of thick steel, brass or quality plastic will do fine with moderate foot traffic and won´t scratch. "Moderate foot traffic" is what you´d expect in any home or office setting. Heavy foot traffic, the kind you find in a bar, restaurant, or during your typical party will do a number on almost any register.
