Recessed Lighting
There are many things which make recessed lighting popular. Here are a few considerations to think about when planning the lighting for a room or new home.
Why Choose Recessed Lighting?
These lights add an ambiance to a room along with the required amount of illumination.
Installation can be done in groups, which offers you freedom of illuminating only the desired area or the entire room. Further, you can explore various lighting designs that would add to the beauty of your room design.
Being recessed, the lighting fixtures do not hang down from the ceiling or cover the walls, which makes them a perfect pick for small spaces. Your walls are left free for cabinets, shelves, or your favorite artwork.
Lighting Placement Ideas
Maintain a uniform distance between the lights. The distance will depend upon the number of lights you will be using and the size of the space you need to illuminate.
Next, you can either add these lighting fixtures in straight lines or curves. By straight lines, I mean that you can follow familiar shapes like equally spaced rows, a square, rectangle, triangle, or square within a square.
You can also opt for free hand style using curved patterns. This can include equally spaced 'S' shaped rows, or a circle or oval shaped pattern. A curved pattern is commonly used to add lights to curved or vaulted ceilings.
Recessed fixtures are popularly used for drop ceiling lighting (usually in basements). In addition to the "Hi-Hats" shown in the photo, recessed lights can be flourescent fixtures measuring 2 ft. by 2 ft. or 2 ft. by 4 ft. These flourescent fixtures give more ambiant (spread out) lighting, while the Hi-Hats point the light more up-and-down (directly onto a surface).

Form Follows Function
When determining the lighting pattern for a kitchen, the layout should be approached differently than when considering a living room or bedroom. With kitchen lighting you need to mainly illuminate the countertop area, serving table, cabinets and shelves.
In a bedroom, the main areas to be illuminated are a wardrobe, for reading in bed perhaps, and table/study table. When working on lighting placement for a living room, uniformly spaced lights spanning the entire living room will give the best lighting.
If you just want to highlight a few areas (in case of very large living rooms) you may wish to cluster the lights for an entertainment center, sofa and table, chatting corner and the entrance.
