Office Storage Cabinets
Keeping Your Home Office Organized
Office storage cabinets come in a variety of designs. In addition to modular storage cabinets, you can also purchase custom cabinets to meet your precise needs and the dimensions of the space.
In general, storage cabinets are designed to efficiently and safely store files and reference material. When possible you should seek out a storage cabinet designed specifically for the purpose you intend to use it for.
Drawers keep small items consolidated and reduce the risk of loss, while shelves can be used for bulky items. Files can be stored in lateral or hanging cabinets, depending on which design is best suited to your space, and other office supplies can be kept in drawers or on shelves as well.
In a well-organized office, it is easy to find things. Office cabinets are often built shallow so that things will not be pushed to the back and lost. Many office storage cabinets come with locks which secure confidential or sensitive material.
Most offices seem to run short of filing cabinets and office storage cabinets. Every day, documents need to be filed. When filing is not done on a regular basis, it is common to find desks filled with papers.
If documents are not filed, it will take you several minutes to look into the pile of documents. This can be particularly annoying when you have a client waiting on the phone for you to find something.
Using a filing cabinet is the best way to organize office documents. However, filing the documents does not mean just putting them inside a folder and fastening them all together.
By organizing documents, you must have a system for easy retrieval. Most filing is done alphabetically, but numeric systems are also commonly used (say by project number). This system must also be known to anyone else who uses the office so that they would know how to file documents in the correct folders.
File cabinets can be standard (front to back) or lateral (side to side). You can choose from 2 drawer, 3 drawer cabinets, or 4 drawer cabinets. Options include a variety of woods and colors, wooden cabinets or steel cabinets.
There are pro and cons to these. Steel cabinets are durable and light-weight. Wood is more aesthetically pleasing, but you should examine them to see how they are made.
Ask about the capacity of the drawer slides. Drawers tend to get heavy when they are full of papers, so the drawer slides should be rated for 150 pounds if your drawer is 3 feet wide or more.
Buy office equipment that can be rolled out of the way when not in use. Also, place inexpensive casters on file cabinets to create movable storage space.
Free up floor space with shelving units that hang on the wall. Wall hooks or pegs can also provide additional off-the-floor storage in your home office area.
