Log Home Decorating

You start with a rustic retreat, which is great, but it restricts your options for log home decorating. The idea of having a log home is that you want to be a part of nature. The way that you decorate this space will depend largely on your own personality.

However, the essence of log home decorating should conform to the philosophy of being in a natural environment. The logs and planks on the walls are a given.

You have to work with that as a basis. You should pay special attention to the size of the logs used on the walls of your log home. This has a significant impact on the visual appearance of the rooms.

In effect, smaller diameter logs are more subdued - less apparent - than larger logs. Usually, larger logs will require larger rooms, higher ceilings and may need more furnishings and accessories.

Interior lighting is an important part of log home decorating. You don't want your log home to look dark and oppressive, so allow lots of light to come in.

Make ample use of windows and skylights. This has the added benefit of giving you more opportunity to view the astounding view you probably have outside.

Supplement this natural light with indoor lighting which combines ambient (general) lighting with task lighting. Use the lighting to enhance any artwork or interesting furniture. Try to take the emphasis away from the log walls.

Don't clutter a room so much that it becomes difficult to walk through it. Allow for easy traffic flow when placing furniture. Sparse furnishings help to enlarge and brighten your indoor space.

Focal points are important whenever a room gets decorated, but are particularly important when log home decorating. The obvious focal point in a log home will be the fireplace (or wood burning stove). If you don't have one, use a cluster of paintings, framed by some casual furniture.

Where the room is especially large, you can make a number of smaller sections with their own settings. This will allow small groups of people to have their own conversations or activities.

It's also nice to use rugs of various sizes and shapes for each of these sections. These rugs, like the furniture settings, should be different, but complimentary. You should maintain a consistent flavor throughout the space.

The most appropriate type of flooring to use in a log home is wide wood planking - usually pine. You can add interest and variety by having tiles or stone, framed in wood borders.

Some log home enthusiasts are concerned about not having modern amenities. There is no reason why you can't have them. Why would you not have a granite counter top?

All of the modern electronics can easily be hidden behind walls and furniture. Stereo components can be put inside cabinetry. You can still have all your modern conveniences if you take some time and effort to conceal them.

In the final analysis, we can sum things up by saying that each individual will have to find their own personal vision for log home decorating. If the furnishings and details have a story to tell, that makes it "Your House." Meaning gives strength to your decorating. Use it.
