Liquor Cabinets
Liquor cabinets came into style in the 1920s during Prohibition as a clever way to hide alcohol. Today many people have liquor cabinets in their homes, but sometimes find that deciding on one to purchase can be a difficult decision. Begin by considering the size of the cabinet. These cabinets come in numerous sizes. How big or small yours will be is a large factor when it comes to stocking the cabinet. Adjustable shelves will give you more flexibility. The size will impact how many bottles you buy and the size of the liquor bottles. Remember this when you determine what you will spend. Know your budget. Make a list of the different types of liquor you wish to purchase. Stocking your cabinet should be as easy as filling your food shelves. Creating a “grocery list” will make the process much easier. If you are just a casual drinker with a few favorite liquors, you can get by with a small unit with storage for bottles and a small assortment of bar tools like a corkscrew or martini strainer. If you plan on hosting large parties, you might want space for a large assortment of alcohol, as well as accompanying glassware and tools.
Examine the space where you will position your new cabinet. Determine how large or small a cabinet you need, depending upon where you're going to place it in your home. Ask yourself these questions about possible options: Do you want a stand alone or an built-in cabinet? How many shelves do you want? Do you want a refrigeration area within your cabinet? Do you need glass doors? Does the cabinet need to be locked for any reason? This is important if you have children in the house. Although liquor cabinets can be made of any wood specie, the softer woods are prone to warping due to the heat and humidity changes within your home. Therefore, harder woods such as oak or cherry are recommended. If you want a painted finish, maple is probably your best bet.
Don't fill the cabinet with liquors you don't enjoy. Many people do this because they'll be throwing a party and they're aware their guests enjoy that particular liquor.
Nevertheless, it's your liquor and should cater to your needs and wants. Instead of trying to please others with their choices, fill the cabinet with liquors you enjoy and try to get your friends to enjoy those liquors, as well as the drinks you can make with them.
Stock the cabinet with an assortment of liquors. No matter how much you like whiskey, filling your liquor cabinet with three different brands is just foolish.
Buy flavored liquors and a combination of both “strong” and “weak” liquors. Also, buy liquors that can be used to mix drinks as well as those that can be enjoyed alone.
Purchase one expensive, high quality liquor and place it in the cabinet. Every liquor cabinet should have one premium liquor for special occasions.
For example, if you are indeed a big fan of whiskey, buy one “normal” brand of whiskey and also a higher priced bottle. You don't need to spend over $100 on that bottle. Browse around until you find the premium liquor of your choosing.
