Kitchen Planning

These kitchen planning ideas were submitted by Alex Corcoran of Wren Kitchens in the U.K. I thank Alex for submitting this useful information for my visitors.

Planning Your New Kitchen

If you are planning your new kitchen then the key word is most definitely ‘planning’. You need to be organised, learn to love lists and make sure you keep track of everything. If this does not come naturally to you then make sure you acquire the discipline quickly or enlist the help of someone better suited to the task.

As well as your purchases you will have to be aware of the finances, the timings of the project and the order in which the required jobs need to be completed. That is a lot of information to try and keep in your head!

Kitchen design is something which a lot of us have a go at but really is best left to the professionals – or at least let the expert cast an eye over your plans. Kitchen designers do just that, design kitchens, all day and every day so they are ideally placed to come up with the best result for you.

They may know about gadgets and storage solutions you haven’t even heard of and come up with new options to consider – it is well worth the conversation, especially if your supplier offers the service for free.

The basic ‘building block’ of every kitchen is the kitchen units which you choose so spend time researching your options and select wisely. Although they are manufactured in a range of standard sizes the materials used and the finishes available are many and varied so get it right for your style and budget. Finish off the foundation of the finished room with a great worktop and you are well on your way to planning your dream kitchen.

Remember, it is possible to achieve a perfect result if you remain in control of your kitchen plan, so get out that notebook and get going!

Think Small as Well as Big

If you are planning some home renovations, either with professional help or as a DIY project, then don’t fall into the trap of forgetting the details because you are focussed on the big stuff. However great your new furniture is, the lounge won’t be finished without great curtains, and no matter how perfect your new bed is, without new bedding it won’t be at its best.

In the kitchen, tiling is something which we might not spend a lot of time thinking about, as by the time you have worked your way through all the other design options you will probably be seeing double! Amazing tiles can really work for you though, marrying together the wall and base units, finishing off the colour scheme and even making a statement in their own right.

Size and scale also play an important role in kitchen planning: choose from tiny mosaic squares to oversized rectangular tiles and think about the optical illusions you can create. A feature tile or border tile will also draw the eye around the room or to a particular point so use them wisely to maximum effect.

With your kitchen worktops it is easy to forget that they are one of the largest features of a kitchen, especially if you have the space for a particularly long run of solid counter top.

How will the finish you opt for reflect the light? How practical is it? And does it work as the horizontal centre of the design scheme? There truly is a lot to think about!

Finally, the finishing touches are all important: the door handles on the cupboards and drawers, the paint on the walls, the window dressings and even the pictures you put up will all make the room your own. Think big with your overall kitchen design, but don’t forget to think small too.
