Don't Be Afraid of Dark Woods
It’s not just traditional kitchens that look good with wooden cabinets, worktops or flooring. More and more contemporary kitchens are bringing back wooden designs but with a modern twist, so here are a few ideas to keep in mind, if you want to go for that natural look.
Dark woods are very trendy at the moment for worktops and cabinets and are featured in many design magazines.
These timbers, like walnut for example, have a beautiful dark tone which not only looks great but is easy to maintain, as they disguise stains that can hinder the look of other types of wood.
Dark woods look good when contrasted with neutral walls, so go for a plain white or pale coloured paint to really draw the eye to your stunning wooden fittings. Contrasting wooden surfaces with stone is another look that surprisingly, works well.
Granite or marble countertops with a dark wood adds texture to a kitchen, as the grains in the timber and impurities in the stone give a natural feel to the room. Creating an all wooden kitchen island will make it the perfect focal point of the room.
If you go for this look, make sure you have some task lighting above the area that will help with preparing and serving food but will also draw the eye to the feature. Lighting around the rest of the kitchen should be softer so that the different textures of the wood in the room come to life.

Using blocks of bold colours on your walls means that pale woods would be best suited for your kitchen cabinets. Combined with chrome handles, this will give a slight retro twist to an otherwise contemporary design.
Wood is a classic material for kitchen design but using these tips will give that modern edge that is perfect for a contemporary kitchen.
