Back in Black
If you really want to stand out from the crowd with your kitchen design, then using black in different areas of the room is bang in fashion at the moment.
A glossy finish to kitchen cabinets or work surfaces is very popular, as they give a defined and modern style to the room.
The downside to this look is that it requires plenty of maintenance as fingerprints on this kind of surface stand out like a sore thumb.
If you have a small kitchen then you should limit the amount of black you use in the space you have.
A solid black wall, for example, will make the room feel even smaller than it already is.
Instead, black fittings against pale or solid white walls will contrast well and will in fact increase the illusion of space in the room.

Very wide drawers on kitchen fittings are a great look for black kitchen cabinets, especially in a painted, matt finish.
If you want to be really bold, then going for a strong black and red combination is the way forward.
Blocks of these colours used around the kitchen will give a very powerful look that contrasts well.
The red will prevent the black from being oppressive, but a strong red will also be very imposing.
To break this up, use warm woods to contrast with the powerful tones and this will make the space far more comfortable to live in.
The wooden surfaces could be timber flooring or a thick butcher’s board countertop for a black kitchen island. One of the main rules to remember with black is that less is more.
If you overdo it, you will make your kitchen look too harsh and feel smaller, but get it right, and it will look fantastic.
