More Interior Decorating Ideas

What topics should you think about when developing your interior decorating ideas? Well, it's a huge topic with lots of elements to consider. For starters, there's a difference in how you should approach the issue, determined by which part of the house you're decorating.

Things To Think About

To begin, ask yourself how you will use the room. For example, you know that a bedroom will need a bed, a chair, and a lamp. But will you also use an armoire (or any piece of large ornate cabinetry) as a major decorative piece, or will you reserve some space for an exercise machine.

How often will the room get used? Your thinking will be different for a seldom-used living room than for a den or great room that is used every day.

If you have a favorite color, perhaps you can introduce it through fabrics or paint.

How much natural light comes into the room? This will determine the degree of lighting you'll need.

What furniture pieces do you need? What style of furniture do you love? What will the room's focal point be? Decide where the larger pieces will go first. Then arrange the smaller pieces and accessories.

Will an area rug add to the overall look of the room? If so, make sure the size works proportionately with the size of the furniture, and anchor the rug with the furniture around the perimeter.

What interests do you have? What places do you love? How can you introduce one or both into your interior decorating ideas? Maybe a mural can represent a vacation spot that you loved. Do this sort of thing to personalize the home - make it "YOURS".

If you are addressing the "living area" (kitchen, den, living room, dining room), you should have a common thread which will link the rooms - either by a common color, window treatments, or flooring (as examples). Bedrooms and bathrooms can be looked at as independent, without any elements in common with other rooms.

If you have the money, and don't have the time to do all the research and leg work yourself, you might hire a professional designer. These folks are usually worth the money, because they have contacts with suppliers that you don't have; they get discounts you won't get, and they have the talent and experience to know what decorating elements go well together.

However, you will still have to stay involved to a degree - giving direction and approving selections.

Any good interior decorating ideas will include the following elements: flooring, wall coverings, window treatments, accessories, lighting, and furniture. When combined properly, these will create a beautiful interior space.

Decorating Styles

When formulating your interior decorating ideas for a particular room, it's best to maintain a theme, or style. The final result is always better than trying to choose artwork or furniture without regard to the style of the room.

Some examples of style include: contemporary, casual, formal, country, tuscan, black and white, parisian, scandanavian, western, or having rustic charm. Educate yourself in order to determine which styles you like. Make a plan. Then stick to the plan.
