Home Theater Furniture

Your home theater furniture must be comfortable. You won't be sitting and watching movies for 2 hours or more without comforatble seating.

Even if you have good audio and video quality, your home theater won't be enjoyable without comfortable seating. Here are some guidelines that should help you find what's right for you.

The Size of the Home Theater Relative to the Seating

Before going into any other detail about home theater furniture, you have to think about the size. Your family and guests must be able to move about freely. Also consider the number of people who potentially will be watching a movie together.

Furthermore, you have you should be aware that the surface and size of the chairs or sofa could affect the quality of your sound system. The bigger the seating, the more sound will be absorbed by the fabric.

The seat layout can range from beanbags, regular leather sofas to something more customary. Generally, leather seats are preferred, to maintain the elegance of the home theater. The seats can either be a joint unit or separated seats.

Prices of Home Theater Furniture Home theater furniture can be expensive. Do A LOT of comparison shopping. The best prices are likely to be found on the internet, but you probably will want to visit a few stores first - to get a good look at fabrics and sizes.

Compare prices and at the same time choose what you believe is the best quality. Make sure that the price fits your budget, including the delivery charge - especially if you will buy it online.

Choosing the perfect home theater furniture with a tight budget is never an easy task.

The next important concern is the placement of the seats. The seats cannot be placed at any random distance from the screen. The width of the screen and the angle of vision have to be considered when calculating the distance.

As per the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE) guidelines:

•The ideal angle of vision to get the best 2D effect for an HDTV signal, is 30 degree horizontal angle of view and 15 degree vertical angle of view, which corresponds to a viewing distance of 1.9 times the screen width, for a single row of seats.

•If more than one row of seats has to be installed, then a range is specified for the angle of vision. Horizontal angles of 36 degrees for the front row and 26 degrees for the last row, which corresponds to the viewing distance range of 2.2 to 1.54 times the screen width.

•The limits on the viewing distance is a minimum of 2 times the screen width, for the nearest distance and 5 times the screen width, for the farthest distance. Ideal distance is 3 times screen width.

Moving any closer to the screen than the specified limits may result in poor picture quality and slight distortion.

For those who like to lie down and relax, recliners are a great option. A recliner has a folding footrest, that can be unfolded when required. Since, the recliners spread out horizontally, adequate space is required at the front and back of the seat.

If recliners are to be placed in more than one row, they should be well-spaced from each other. Drinks and snacks are inevitable in a home theater. Select seats where the armrest has suitable provisions for holding the drinks and snacks.

If the home theater has more than one row, platforms can be installed. Home theater seating platforms, with risers or steps, are essentially used for better viewing from the back rows.

Ordinarily, riser levels vary from 6 to 8 inches but in home theaters, the risers can be up to one foot high. At the same time, they should be wide enough, so that the large seats can be placed upon them, without toppling over. If that is not possible, another option is to arrange the seats (if separate) in a way that insures the best possible view.
