Home Security Devices

By using a variety of home security devices, you can protect your home from burglary. On this page we will list them and describe those that might be unfamiliar to most homeowners.

Either hard-wired or wireless electronic burglar alarm systems - the main difference is cost.

Monitored home security - a monthly fee to have alarms go back to a monitoring facility which notifies the police.

Security (or surveillance) cameras - can include closed circuit TV cameras.

External security lighting

Internal security lighting

Security bars - at the windows and doors. Usually pretty ugly.

Carbon monoxide detectors - a safety feature usually included in most building codes (and a good idea).

Smoke and/or fire detectors - also a good idea.

DIY home security systems - NOT a good idea.

Deadbolt door locks - a second lock; can't get through with a credit card. Use 3" screws to make sure it is connected to the frame of the door opening. USE IT!

Driveway alarms - lets you know when a vehicle is on your driveway.

Security signs - when posted in the yard, conspicuously, are a very effective deterent. Signs usually come with an alarm system if a reputable company did the installation.

Some of the most effective home security devices are electronic security systems, visual deterrence, and security bars.

The electronic security systems are very good. Someone from the security provider of your choice will come and wire your whole house with an alarm system.

If someone tried to break into your home, the alarm be sent to the central monitoring facility. The security provider calls the police for you. They will also call you to make sure that everyone is safe. This option does have a monthly fee involved.

Most people tend to go for something that does not require a monthly fee, but will hopefully get the same job done in the end. An example would be alarms and sirens which would make the burglars leave, presuming that the police are being notified.

Visual deterrents are another good source of security. You can purchase signs that you have a security system hooked up. Sometimes that is enough to deter an intruder.

There are even options like motion sensors, that have lights go on at the slightest movement. You could also install similar motion sensor detectors in your doors and windows. They can be made to emit a loud siren if moved.

We have all seen those iron security bars around some windows and doors. Those home security devices will definitely create an obstacle for someone who is trying to break in.

Just make sure that they are over every possible entrance of your house. They should provide enough of a challenge that the burglar will change his mind and go where the entry seems easier.

If you are unsure what option will best suit your family's needs, consult someone who specializes in security issues. They can come to your house and help you figure out how to best make your home safe.

Once in place your family will feel so much safer. It might never happen to you, but you want to be prepared in case it does.
