Home Remodeling Ideas

Many home remodeling ideas can be applied to areas other than kitchens and baths. Some involve upgrading existing rooms; others create additional living space.

This can be accomplished by turning unfinished basement or attic space into functional rooms such as home offices, home theaters, or additional bedrooms. A more costly alternative for remodeling houses is to add square footage with an extension or addition.

In spite of the current housing market, completing one of your home remodeling ideas is a good way to invest your money. Some statistics taken from 2007 reports indicate the potential return from several home remodeling ideas.

Even after considering the volatile housing market, any renovation that increases the use of space has an immediate return for your family that you can't translate into dollars.

Here are a few examples of the statistics (on a national average):

Attic bedroom remodel cost $46,691; resale value = $35,771; for a 76.6% return.

Basement remodel cost $59,435; resale value = $44,661, for a return of 75.1%.

Sunroom addition cost $69,817; resale value = $41,231; for a return of 59.1%.

Family room addition cost $78,989; resale value = $54,148; returning 68.6%.

Master suite addition cost $98,863; resale value = $68,172; returning 69%.

Two-story addition cost $139,297; resale value = $103,010; for a 73.9% return.

Of course, there are many inexpensive remodeling ideas which can be implemented to get a house ready for sale, to make the layout of the home more practical, to refresh worn-out decor by redecorating, or just to brighten up a room.

When remodeling houses, the most important issue is WHY you're doing it. The reason, along with the budget, will determine the scope of the project.

If you want to get the house ready for resale, you should spend as little as possible, making sure everything is in good working order.
