Choosing A Gun Cabinet
The gun cabinet is a must-have for hunting and firearms enthusiasts, especially since most of them like showing off their collection. A wood gun cabinet, more often than not, is their preferred storage space for the assortment of weapons they have accumulated over the years.
They typically use wood over the steel cabinets and safes because these are more pleasing to the eye, especially with a stained wood finish. Oak, cherry, and pine are the most common kinds of wood used for this type of furniture.
Pick the kind which is not only sturdy, but also matches the rest of the decor of your home. Because it is made of wood, you can have carvings or etched glass included in the design, as well as lighting inside the storage area itself. Pick a cabinet that will not clash with the theme or style of your home.
The primary thing to keep in mind when choosing one of these cabinets is safety. No matter how attractive the cabinets are, if they do not have safety locks, do not buy it, especially if you have children at home.

Security Measures
Even if you don't have kids, there's still the very real possibility of having someone breaking and entering your house and stealing a few items from your collection. In the extreme, there are some cabinets that have built-in biometrics scanning to limit the people who will be able to access the firearms.
But the locks of your gun storage cabinet do not need to be super fancy, just sturdy and secure enough to be able to keep other people from getting to your weapons. If you're not a collector, and actually use your firearms from time to time, ALWAYS keep your ammunition hidden somewhere else.
Size Of The Cabinet
Next, make sure that the wood cabinet you're considering is large enough to house your collection, with room to spare for any future pieces you might add. If you're a serious collector, chances are, you'll pick up your share of firearms over the years, so don't pick a gun cabinet that stores exactly the number of weapons you now have.
Furthermore, you have to be sure that the size of the cabinet supports the length of your guns. For example, hunting rifles would need taller cabinets than handguns or shotguns.
For Do-It-Yourselfers
It's also possible to build a wood gun cabinet by yourself. There are some kits available for do-it-yourselfers, but it's also possible to build one from scratch. Carpentry books can be bought, and plans are available on the internet, if you have a desire to do it.

Made from any wood, the project can be finished clear or stained dark. Despite the project’s typically small footprint (32 inches wide by 18 inches deep), there should be an upper cabinet which holds rifles or shotguns securely locked behind tempered-glass doors. The lower cabinet, which also locks, should include a shelf and drawer, for accessories, cleaning material, and supplies.
The great thing about old guns is the stories they tell. From the well-worn .22 you had as a child to Grandpa’s old double-barrel shotgun to an M1 Garand that helped win World War II, every gun collector has a special "show-and-tell” to display.
