Garage Flooring Options

There are a variety of treatments used for garage flooring. Floor finishes can range from floor paint to epoxy sealers. But sometimes the right choice for a garage would be a plain concrete floor.

Choosing the proper flooring surface for your garage really depends on the use. The key thing to note when choosing a floor is the benefits that you can gain by applying a good surface.

If you are looking to increase the value of your current home for resale then you may want to invest in some nice flooring for your garage. When a couple is shopping for that perfect home, they will be looking at different things.

She is looking for comfort and style while he is looking for usability and longevity. When they shop around, very few homes will have a nicely redone floor in the garage. Of course, the real benefit comes to you and your family while you live in the house.

Stained and cracked concrete floors can be transformed from drab to eye-catching. It can be turned into a work area, playroom, office, gym, you name it.

Epoxy Flooring provides a skid-free surface that is easy to clean. The coating is a tough impact resistant and durable surface that is seamless and resists dirt and bacteria.

You can open your garage as an extension of your home for entertaining -- even eating or playing is safe when you have a clean epoxy floor. A cousin of mine recently did this when celebrating his son's graduation.

Epoxy provides a chemically resistant surface that will not peel like a painted floor. When properly installed, epoxy will outdo any other surface--plus, you can choose from a wide variety of colors and design schemes.

Garage Flooring Tiles are also a great option for your garage flooring. Tiles are available in many colors and textures and have a higher durability than paint. If you have a lot of traffic in your garage, tiles offer a tough impact resistant and durable surface.

The flooring tiles fit together creating a water tight seal and are made from materials that are both fire and chemical resistant. You simply overlap the pieces and press them together to create a floor that suits your size and needs.

These tiles float over the actual concrete floor and much like laminate flooring you can easily remove or replace a single tile that gets damaged rather than needing to redo the entire floor. They’ll make your garage look spiffy indeed. Be aware they come in different levels of slip resistance and price.

Painted Concrete is your cheapest option by far. But be sure you read the instructions on the paint can and use a paint that’s designed to be applied to concrete floors.

You may need to use a special primer to get great results. Think about slip resistance. Painted floors can be slippery when wet.

Make sure the preparation is done thoroughly. The floor has to be properly cleaned before you apply any paint.

Maintenance on your epoxy or rubber floor will be easy and painless. Installing flooring tiles or putting an epoxy coating on the floor makes the maintenance as easy as using detergent and warm water.

In the event you decide to go with a paint, take your time and do the research. I’ve had any number of homeowners contact me about hot-tire syndrome.

If you live where it can get very hot in the summer, you'll probably have to deal with this issue at some point.
