10 Easy Decorating Ideas

There are dozens of easy decorating ideas that will work in any home. Here are only 10 - with some research, you can find hundreds.

1. Use things from nature.

Inspired by collections of natural finds gathered by explorers and traders in 16th- and 17th-century Europe, this trend focuses on the wondrous, odd, or rare elements of nature. Today, anything taken from outside or with a natural motif qualifies and can be put on display.

Popular subjects are birds, bird nests, butterflies, shells, and coral. My wife loves to collect things at the beach - shells, sea glass, pretty stones, etc. Think about what YOU would enjoy looking at.

Memorabilia from past vacations can also make a great addition to your natural decor. Found objects, driftwood, sand dollars, new purchases in sea-inspired colors...all of them can give you easy decoarting ideas and make your home comfortable and informal.

2. Bring the Outdoors In.

Make the walls between the indoors and outdoors seem like a formality. Plant things close to windows so that their beauty comes into the room when the windows are uncovered.

3. Inspiration should be found in things you love.

The best design and decorating ideas don't have to be pulled out of thin air. Inspiration can come from anywhere--a picture or photograph, a great fabric or piece of clothing, even jewelry. Keep your eyes open for inspiration and ideas to create a room that is exceptionally you.

Clusters of family photos will often make for interesting conversation while providing happy memories.

4. Add color through accessories.

Neutral rooms are often at their finest when a dose of color is added in. Emerald green or any jewel tone will add richness and depth. A neutral backdrop also gives you freedom to change the look of a room without breaking the bank. Throw pillows and accessories in new colors can be brought in for an instant, budget-friendly makeover.

5. Mix and Match.

Too many neutrals can easily become a visual jumble. To avoid the confusion, use elements with different weights and sizes in your space. An oversized silver vase and thick drapes are easy decorating ideas that add oomph, while a glass table lamp and light gray walls add softness to a room otherwise dominated by neutral shades.

The accessories and color palate should create contrast and balance between rich tones and an airy feel. Mismatched pieces add charm to a space.

6. Use new and old items in harmony.

Pairings of darks with lights and antiques with contemporary items evolve into a space with personality. Neutrals offset by dark chocolate brown or white accents will make the room more interesting and give it depth. Contemporary furniture mixed with antique accents creates a unique tone and brings old and new together.

7. Use 3D on the walls.

A wavy window valance, or a sculpted piece of artwork on the wall (which isn't flat), will break up the "boxy" look and provide interest.

8. Use furniture that works in several locations.

A small chair on wheels is easy to move around for conversation or entertaining. The small scale of the chair, and the fabric, make it a subtle feature that will work in several positions. This ensures that the chair will not look out place in any location, nor will it leave a void in its "permanent" spot.

9. Replace a closet door with a curtain.

If your closet lacks a door, or if the door is awkward when open, use a cute, colorful shower curtain suspended from a shower rod. This easy decorating idea hides the otherwise visible closet interior - a definite plus when guests visit. This is also useful at cramped laundry areas.

10. Show off your creativity.

If you have a craft or a talent that can be displayed, by all means put it where people will see it. Quilts are particularly good on walls. My mother has hung a few of her hooked rugs - and they look great.

Don't be afraid to try things. You can always change them if they don't work for you. Having a few easy decorating ideas, and trying them out, can really be a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
