Curio Cabinets

The use of curio cabinets has changed over the years. They were originally used exclusively by the wealthy in the early 1700's.

Their purpose was for elite socialites and royalty to display their treasures. An indication of wealth, curio cabinets during that era were not for the average person.

Many of these cabinets were works of art themselves. They often had intricate glass work and each one was uniquely handcrafted. Ornate decorations such as inlays, generally required months to produce.

Since the primary purpose of this cabinet is to display your pretty things, you should select one that has interior lighting. You may find that the normal room lighting is not adequate enough to light the interior of the cabinet.

A good way to accent your possessions is to subdue the ambient room lighting, and let the interior light of the cabinet be the featured item in the room. Combined with a beveled edge on your glass door and the crystal items in the cabinet, the effect can be impressive.

If space is tight, you can use a wall mounted cabinet, or a corner cabinet. If not, the larger free standing cabinets can be a dominant feature, and can become the focal point in a room.

Lastly, if you have small children, look for a cabinet that has a lock on the door. This will keep your precious things out of harm's way.
