Contemporary Fireplace

Because a contemporary fireplace could be either modern or classical design, it is well suited to any interior design theme. Very modern rooms are given a touch of classical elegance thanks to the hints of Art Deco, while rooms that have a more classical feel, get an up-to-date tone thanks to the modern lines of a contemporary fireplace.

You will need to select the design theme of the room prior to deciding on the style of the fireplace. For example, a hearth designed from brick is good for components with basic designs - but not for contemporary ones. In addition, you'll have to decide between gas, electric, and wood burning fireplaces.

Mantels And Surrounds

A traditional fireplace will have a mantel and a surround. A contemporary version may have neither. If you do want a mantel and surround at a modern-looking fireplace, you could certainly create those using simple, straight lines.

These days, the design selections for mantel and surround designs are so plentiful, you might have trouble choosing which you like best. Stone mantels and surrounds should certainly come first on the list if you're creating a contemporary fireplace. These can be made from marble, granite, limestone and slate among others.

Marble fireplace mantels and surrounds are probably the most appealing among these materials, but are also the most costly. On the other hand, limestone, granite, and slate rock mantels, while cheaper than marble units, offer good aesthetics.

If you would like to integrate a traditional or vintage look to your fireplace, using wooden fireplace mantels and surrounds, there's nothing to prevent you from combining these elements with the overall contemporary look of your room.

If it feels right to you, go right ahead. Design is all about reflecting your own personal tastes.

Wooden mantels and surrounds (if used) should probably be painted a solid color. Natural wood tones would bring the look back toward traditional, and if you're going contemporary, it would seem a bit contradictary. The good news about using wood components is that they are much less expensive than the stones.

Brick fireplace mantels and surrounds are also pretty popular. They have a timeless appeal that reflects the look of country living. Modern brick mantels and surrounds happen when the homeowner uses tan or burnt bricks. Furthermore, bricks can be painted any color you think appropriate.

Customized Features

Finally, another option you could go for is to have your mantel and surround custom-made. These days, homeowners with contemporary fireplaces prefer to have custom-made mantels and surrounds because of their unique aesthetics and their perfect fit.

The idea of customization will guarantee that you end up with a fireplace that you really love. Since the fireplace will probably be the focal point of the room, it's important that YOU love it. Just be sure to plan it early so you know what you want when you start talking to suppliers.
