Child Tracking Device

Few things terrify a parent more than the thought of losing a child. Child tracking devices can help you locate your child in the event he wanders away from you or is abducted. Most child safety tracking devices use GPS software to track a child's position.

A child tracking device links to a satellite that can locate the device at any time. As long as the device remains functional and with your child, the child can be located. Some tracking devices begin to track the child if he leaves a certain area, while others track the child constantly.

Others monitor the child's vital signs. Some devices offer a "panic button" that can be activated by a lost child.

Devices

The most common child tracking devices are contained in an article of clothing or a piece of jewelry, like a watch. Some bracelet-like devices are made with material that prevents cutting and fasten in such a way that they can only be removed by the parent with a special key. Implantable tracking devices can be surgically placed under the child's skin.

Features

A wide variety of features are available, depending on the amount you have to spend and the particular needs you envision. Some devices can track the movements of a child and locate that child in a relatively small area, such as a supermarket. Others can help locate a missing child and may even tie into a state or national GPS system.

No technology is perfect; tracking systems can fail or give erroneous information. Parents must also guard against the temptation to rely too heavily on technological babysitters; no device can ever replace good parenting.

Even if you use a child tracking device, know where your child is at all times and have appropriate discussions with your child about potentially dangerous situations and circumstances, including potential threats from people your child knows.

Implants?

I don't think implanting a device is a good idea. If you are considering an implantable device, remember that the power sources of such devices will eventually need to be replaced which may necessitate another surgical procedure.

Also remember that implanting a device into your child's body may raise issues of trust between you and your child. There is also the risk of instilling an attitude of fear into your child that could be more harmful than helpful.

When To Stop Using Child Tracking Devices

Although children's safety is primarily the responsibility of their parents, it's important that older kids and teenagers learn how to manage their own lives and be given the chance to work with their guardians regarding what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

The fitting of a GPS device to a child impacts upon their independence and implies that their parents do not trust them to take responsible decisions about where they go and how to conduct their lives. The use of such devices can erode trust and damage a child's view of authority.

The technology behind GPS child tracking devices is not foolproof. A child can tamper with the device or stray into a building or area where it cannot transmit a signal. The best way of ensuring your child's safety is to educate them about the dangers of venturing beyond the parameters you have set and developing a relationship of trust.

Other Applications

Devices used for child safety can also be used to monitor the location of adults with Alzheimer's or dementia and help them be found quickly should they wander away. Many of the same concerns apply when using these devices for adults, particularly that such a device cannot replace adequate supervision.

Having a child GPS locator may sound iffy, but it's highly useful. For many kids, their moms don't pick them up from school, parks, or wherever and drop them off anywhere they have to go. Both parents may be working and hence, traveling from one place to another.

In these cases, a child tracking device will help ensure child safety. Here are some reviews of devices to choose from.

WorldTracker GPRS - Although this GPS tracker costs close to $600, it has been ranked as the best GPS device by the GPS Magazine website. It works indoors and outdoors as it can be easily carried in your kid's backpack or pocket. The small device sends updates to you anywhere with a good cell phone reception.

WorldTracker Enduro - As small as a credit card, the WorldTracker Enduro has the ability to track your child within 10 seconds. The device gives you a GPS location, remote controlled alarm system, an alert alarm in case of emergencies, and a Geo-fencing alarm as well. And by chance, if the batteries are low, the device will send a signal for that as well. Depending on what deal you get, it will cost you anywhere from $300 to $500.

BrickHouse Child Locator - Does your child often wander off? The BrickHouse child locator sends an alert signal whenever such an incident occurs. If you all are visiting a crowded beach or have gone camping, having this device is perfect. Have your child put it on like a watch or keep it in his/her clothes. The device costs about $175.

Amber Alert GPS Armor - If your child has his/her own car and you would like to know about the speed he/she is driving the car, this device will do so. It costs approximately $200 and works indoors as well as outdoors. The Amber Alert GPS has a panic button when pushed, and can send a signal to 5 different people at once.

There are several others with good ratings. Besides these devices, there are also GPS tracking watches. They appear like normal wristwatches, but can transmit important information.
