The Best Washing Machines

HOW TO CHOOSE = Here is what experts say about the best washing machines. Always buy the largest washer that your space and budget will allow.
Even if you’re single, only doing full loads means you’ll be running the machine less, and (bonus) you’ll spend less time doing laundry.
Electronic touch pads look good, but reviews say they are more delicate than knobs and dials, and more expensive to repair.
However, all of the high end machines will come with touch pads because they have computer chips in them. If you’re looking for a budget model, opt for the knobs.
Although the stainless steel tub is pretty standard, you should know that it’s preferred – in case you happen to see a porcelain tub (they chip). Look for automatic temperature controls, (common with the best washing machines) which give you the right water temperature for each chosen cycle.
Follow manufacturer’s recommendations regarding type and amount of detergent. This will result in cleaner clothes and less maintenance.
THE REVIEW = The Best Top-Loading Washer is the GE WJRE5500GWW, which gets good scores for performance and costs less that a high-efficiency front-loading washer. It has a stainless steel tub and uses rotary dial controls. This machine lists for $525.
Other top performers include:
Best High-Efficiency Top-Loader = Fisher & Paykel Intuitive Eco IWL16 @ about $775.
Best Budget Front-Loader = Amana NFW7200TW @ $650.
Best Extra-large Front-Loading Washer = Samsung WF448AAW @ $1400.
