THE BEST RANGE HOODS

HOW TO CHOOSE = When looking at the best range hoods, you will notice that many manufacturers promote the concept of pulling more air out of the house each minute. Be Careful.

There is little evidence that high-CFM hoods are more effective, and there are reasons for homeowners to avoid them. They’re noisy and they consume much more energy than typical range hoods. A high-volume unit will work against your furnace or air conditioning systems.

Experts say that airflow rates over 600 CFM (cubic feet per minute) can lead to a hazardous condition called backdrafting in a well-insulated house. If too much air is removed from the house, the space can become depressurized. This can be avoided by opening a window or door.

Measure before you buy. Make sure the model of best range hoods you select is at least as wide as the range or cooktop. Listen to the range hoods at the store before you buy.

Some are much noisier than others. Look for a hood with good lighting. One of the most common complaints is about inadequate lighting.

Recirculating and downdraft range hoods are usually NOT a good idea. Neither is as effective as a unit that vents outside through the ceiling. But they are better than no hood at all.

Avoid painted metal finishes as they will scratch easily. If you want a colored range hood, look for one with a porcelain enamel finish. Stainless steel is a good finish, but requires cleaning often because it shows grease and fingerprints.

Stainless steel filters last longer and are easier to clean than aluminum mesh filters. This is especially relevant if you fry food a lot.

THE REVIEW = The title of Best Under-Cabinet Range Hood goes to the Kenmore 52340. The tall case prevents steam and smoke from escaping, while the 360 CFM blower draws it out of the kitchen.

Features include 2 lights and an infinite fan speed adjustment. Installation of this $420 unit is relatively easy. These hoods are available in white, almond and black, in widths of 30”, 36” and 42”.

Other Top Performers Include: Best Wall-Mounted Range Hood = Kenmore 50303 at about $510

Best Island Chimney Range Hood = Cavaliere-Euro SV218D36IM at $850

Best Price found in Nov. ’09 = Sears is the only place for Kenmore – around $420.
