Best Pressure Washers

HOW TO CHOOSE = The best pressure washers (also known as power washers) are either gas powered or electric. More power usually adds cost and weight, and there is no benefit to buying more than you need.
Most homeowners only use a pressure washer about 20 hours a year on average. If you only use it to occasionally clean your deck or siding, you should consider renting ( or borrowing, like me).
But if you want to buy, you will have more options if you buy a model with separate spray tips. Turbo nozzles do add stain-removal power, but can leave streaks.
These are not recommended to wash cars – you could damage the paint. However, a turbo nozzle can clean concrete about 3 times faster than a regular nozzle.
Electric is cleaner and quieter than gas. On most electric models, releasing the trigger will cut the motor, saving electricity and eliminating noise, and also protecting the unit from damage.
Check return policies, service and parts availability before you buy. A local source for repair is essential since shipping is prohibitive.
THE REVIEW = The Best Pressure Washer is thought to be the Karcher K 5-93 M. A good quality electric model is the best choice for the widest range of chores.
The Karcher is an owner favorite because it’s powerful enough for most tasks around a home, and it’s quiet (relatively). You can spend more than the $280 list price, but that would probably be overkill.
Other top performers include:
Best Light-duty Electric Pressure Washer = Karcher K 2-93 @ $130.
Best Gas Power Washer = Ridgid RD80701 @ $550.
Best Mid-Range Gas Power Washer = Troy-Bilt 20344 @ $400.
Best Budget Gas Pressure Washer = Craftsman 75218 @ $250.
Best price found in Dec. ’09 and again in May, '10 = Amazon.com (except for the Craftsman at Sears).
