Best Multifunction Printers

HOW TO CHOOSE = When shopping for the best multifunction printers, first think about how often you will use the various functions. How often will you fax – you might want to look for a unit with its’ own modem so you can fax directly. How often do you print photos directly from a camera? Choose a model that tests well with digital photos.

Think about your counter space. Even the best multifunction printers take up a good deal of space. If you plan to print labels, cards, envelopes, etc., a printer’s paper path should be straight-through.

Volume matters for office use. Make sure the model you buy can handle your volume. If you overuse a machine, it can be an excuse for the manufacturer to void the warranty.

The projected use should also be considered when looking at the paper capacity of the printer. Likewise, duplex printing (both sides) is a time-saving convenience.

Duplexing is important in a busy office, but it may not be worth the added expense for home use. If you will connect to your printer through a network, make sure that it is network compatible. Many multifunction printers have ports for wired networking, and some also have wireless networking capabilities.

THE REVIEW = The Best Office MFP with Fax is the Canon Pixma MX850, particularly for small offices. The same model is also available without fax – MP480. Text and graphics quality is excellent, with particularly nice photos.

It is fast, and it includes a connector for network use. Duplex printing is a little slow, and it is a hefty machine at 43 pounds. This piece of office equipment costs about $180.

Other top performers include:

Best Compact MFP with Fax = Epson Workforce 600 @ $200.

Best Tabloid-sized MFP with Fax = Brother MFC-6490cw @ $295.

Best Laser MFP with Fax = Brother MFC-7840W @ $285.
