The Best Humidifiers

HOW TO CHOOSE = When choosing among the best humidifiers, it’s important to find one that can be set to the appropriate level (between 30% and 50%). Too much humidity is not a good thing.

If you get condensation on the inside of your windows, your humidity is too high. This can promote mold, mildew and dust mites.

An adjustable humidistat will measure the humidity in the room and adjust the output of the humidifier. An automatic shut-off will prevent the unit from running when the reservoir is dry. Look for indicator lights which will alert you when water is low, or when the filter needs to be cleaned.

Most humidifiers have adjustable speed fans. The higher speed will humidify quicker, while the lower speed setting will reduce noise.

A removal reservoir will make refilling and cleaning much easier. Dishwasher-safe reservoirs are the easiest to clean. The unit should have casters for easy movement.

Anti-scalding features are important for models with vaporizers and warm-mist options. Some of the best humidifiers offer antibacterial filters.

THE REVIEW = The Best Overall Humidifier is the Kenmore 15408. Experts recommend cool-mist units more often than other types. They are safer and use less energy than the warm-mist variety.

The Kenmore can effectively humidify up to 1700 sq. ft. The downside (typical with humidifiers) is the ongoing expense of replacing filters. This will cost $18 per filter and they should be changed every 60 to 90 days. The price of this model is $110 and can only be bought through Sears.

Other top performers include:

Best Budget Cool-Mist Humidifier = Honeywell HCM-630 @ $35

Best Warm-Mist Humidifier = Honeywell HWM-450 @ $70

Quietest Humidifier = Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonic 7135 @ $160.

Best price found at Amazon.com (again) for all models except the Kenmore.
