The Best Exercise Bikes

HOW TO CHOOSE = When considering the best exercise bikes, think about your goals and about how often you will use the bike. Be realistic.

According to The New York Times, users typically purchase a more elaborate and expensive unit than they need. And a survey from a leading consumer organization shows that 40% of those who buy home fitness machines end up using them less than expected.

A quiet exercise bike is important, especially if you live in a multi-tenant building. Look for programming options and automatic resistance adjustments to keep you within your targeted heart rate range.

Other nice features found on the best exercise bikes include a book rest, bottle holder, LCD backlit screen, and a heart rate monitor.

Upright and recumbent (legs in front instead of underneath) bikes should adjust to the height of any user easily and quickly. Heavy bikes will be stable, but it should be light enough that you can move it easily. Look for at least a 1-year warranty that includes labor.

SAFETY NOTE: About 25,000 children get injured every year on exercise equipment in the United States alone. Bikes with enclosed mechanics and shrouded spokes will cut down on dust, and noise, while protecting curious children and pets. MONEY-SAVING TIP: If you already own a road bike, you can buy a stand that will allow you to use your bike as indoor fitness equipment.

THE REVIEW = The Best Recumbent Exercise Bike is the Schwinn 230. As opposed to an upright bike, a recumbent bike situates the rider against a backrest, with legs in front. Many people (especially older people) find this more comfortable.

Reviewers were very fond of this bike, with 16 levels of resistance and 12 workout programs. The hand grips double as a heart rate monitor, but you have to manually change the resistance level when you wish.

The warranty is for 10 years on the frame, one year on the mechanical and electric, 6 months on wear items and 90 days on labor. It has a user-weight limit of 300 pounds, and it sells for $450.

Best Budget Upright Bike = Marcy PL-43211 @ $145

Best price found at Amazon.com. I know it seems redundant, but I can’t find cheaper prices for these items.
