Bathroom Light Fixtures

Beautiful bathroom light fixtures are a vital element in the design, enhancing the mood of the room. Surprisingly, they are often given little attention.

We start each day in the bathroom, preparing ourselves to meet the outside world. Therefore, your lighting can have a big impact on how you feel.

Although I've never had the experience myself, I imagine that good lighting is essential for putting makeup on evenly. I know it helps when shaving. In this case, the lighting is referred to as vanity lighting or task lighting. Sconces or vertical lighting strips on both sides of the mirror will spread the light evenly over your face.

If your mirror is very wide, or if there's no room for vertical lighting, a better solution may be to have 2 or 3 globe lights centered at the top of the mirror. Recessed lights are not appropriate here because they cast shadows.

Another location where your bathroom light fixtures will produce task lighting is at the shower. A recessed light may be installed above the shower for adequate visibility. Recessed lighting is also often used over a tub or toilet. The covers for your bathroom light fixtures should be made of glass - not plastic. Plastic will turn yellow over time with the heat from the bulb and the humidity.

Safety Tip - Bathroom light fixtures used in your shower, or for your tub, should be designed for use in wet areas. Do not place any type of fixture within reach of someone using the tub or shower.

Natural lighting is always the best choice for bathrooms, but many bathrooms don't have windows or only have small, high windows. Skylights might be possible, but they're expensive and difficult to clean.

An excellent option is a ceiling light mounted in the center of the room with a bulb that emits full spectrum light that is as close to sunlight as possible. This will not only allow you to see yourself as you will look outside, it will give the room a light and airy feel.

Accent lighting is intended to create a certain visual drama, and provide focus to selected details of the room, or for a decorative touch. Track lighting is often used to provide accents because of the flexibility which allows you to point the light directly at the element(s) in the room you wish to highlight. Dimmer switches are a good idea. They are energy savers, and allow your light bulbs to last longer. Dimmers allow you to have "night light" levels of lighting for those occasional visits in the middle of the night.

They also can provide ambiance at the end of a hectic day when you can enjoy lingering in a relaxing bath and unwinding. Scented candles are also good to have at times like this.
