Backyard Waterfalls

Like fountains and ponds, backyard waterfalls provide a relaxing environment where you can unwind. The creation of a calming backyard sanctuary is an ideal way to relieve stress while adding to the enjoyment of your outdoor living experience.

Waterfalls can be found (or made) in an unlimited number of shapes and sizes. They are often found in japanese gardens. Combining a waterfall with a pool or pond will add to the fun and interest of your backyard.

While thinking about your backyard landscaping, you can have your water feature fairly plain, or you can go ornate, with statues and levels of water dropping from one to the next. The only advice I want to give is to keep the sound soothing – don’t overdo it and make it “noisy.”

Using large rocks appeals to me, but you have your own likes and dislikes. Using materials that conform to the terrain and foliage of your area is always a good idea. It helps give the waterfall a natural look – like it belongs there.

Suppliers will offer accessories and supplies enabling you to create as lavish an extravaganza as you want. You could combine your backyard waterfall with a cave, a lagoon, grottos. Actually, it’s very easy to get carried away.

Take a hard look at your outdoor space without the waterfall, then visualize what you think will look good. Look at lots of magazines. The suppliers might offer software programs that let you bring a photo in and superimpose a waterfall over the photo.

The maintenance consists of blowing the lines out before the winter freeze. Allowing ice to form inside the pipes can cause costly damage to the water system. Don't leave a pool of standing water anyplace - you'll have mosquitoes in the Spring, and possible freeze damage.
