Backyard Landscaping Ideas

I suppose you are looking for some backyard landscaping ideas because you would like to improve your quality of life (as well as the value of your home) by improving your outdoor space.

Unless you live on an ice cap, you’ve made a wise decision. Most locations in temperate weather zones can make good use of the outdoors 9 or 10 months a year. Obviously, urban dwellers won’t have any interest in this topic unless they have direct access to a roof.

There are so many choices within the realm of backyard landscaping ideas that I had to devote a separate page to each.

The more “fun and exciting” backyard landscaping topics are:

Backyard decks and Backyard patio design.

Basics of Backyard Design.

Outdoor Living Spaces.

Screened Gazebos.

Garden Sheds.

Landscape Lighting.

Best Deck Stain.

Canvas Awnings.

Sliding Patio Doors.

Backyard water fountains.

Backyard Kitchens.

Backyard Fireplaces.

Planning a Deck in your Backyard.

Backyard fish ponds.

Putting Koi fish in your pond.

Wooden vs. vinyl fences.

Backyard Waterfalls.

Backyard Pools.

Options for Garden Edging.

Backyard Japanese Gardens.

Backyard gazebo ideas.

Some Patio Remodeling Ideas.

Stone and Brick Pavers.

And, lest we forget the front of the house, Frontyard Landscaping. There is a new page there about heated driveways.

VERY IMPORTANT: - With any backyard landscaping ideas involving water, you MUST keep the water moving. Standing water can (will) breed mosquitoes, and cause algae which will become a maintenance headache.

These things can get pricey. Minimize the costs by shopping around until you know exactly what you want, (changing your mind at mid stream could be expensive). Thoroughly plan the project, and make a price comparison of at least 3 contractors. This will save you some money.

You’ve probably noticed that I haven’t listed a few of the more common outdoor options. Swimming pools, hot tubs, and playground equipment don’t improve the value of the house.

I have offered a little information about them and other backyard remodeling ideas on the page entitled Other Backyard Landscape Ideas. (in case you're interested).

This is not to say you can’t have these things. If you want them, go ahead. Your family’s enjoyment is the most important reason for doing any home improvement – but don’t expect much return on investment.
