Backyard Fish Ponds

Backyard fish ponds make a very nice visual addition to any landscape.

But I hope you have some time on your hands, because ponds require a lot of care. However, they could be done with a natural beauty that will visually add a lot to your backyard.

Here are a few tips that will make the upkeep a bit easier.

• Use a plastic liner to keep the nutrients in the soil from getting into the water and poisoning the fish.

• Once a safe PH is established, keep the rain runoffs from infiltrating the pond. This can throw the PH off – not good for the fish. Ask about the correct PH (and how to maintain it) when you buy the fish.

• Keep the water moving. A circulating pump will do. A nice idea is to make the pond a part of a waterfall, so water runs through it. This keeps the algae down and will prevent mosquitoes from breeding there.

• Use several water plants. This too will minimize the algae (which you have to get rid of, so it’ll be less work for you later).

• Install an open net over the pond. This will keep the raccoons and large birds from eating your fish, while allowing you to feed the fish through the netting.

Obviously, the larger you can make your pond, the better the fish will like it.

I’m sure many of your visitors will find it very interesting. It needs attention, but a backyard pond can provide a lot of pleasure. They are often incorporated in the design of japanese gardens, and add a soothing element to your backyard.
