Antique Stained Glass Windows

Antique stained glass windows are beautiful and they can really enhance any room. It is a great way to let light in and brighten up your home. Even in the dullest of months, your stained glass windows are cheery.

History of Stained Glass Windows

The use of colored glass has been used since ancient times. The Egyptians and Romans are famous for their stained glass artifacts. Items such as vases and perfume bottles from these ancient people are treasured in museums across the world.

It wasn’t until the 4th century that colored glass was used to produce stained glass window panels. This practice was first used in (yes you guessed it) Christian churches.

These lovely colored glass windows can be seen across the world in almost any church and this is where the birth of stained glass window panels began.

The craft of making stained glass windows came from England to America during the mid 1800s. Over many years, the designs became distinctly "Americanized." Techniques were created which allowed a wider range of colors and shapes.

New home builders would sometimes incorporate a stained glass window into the design of a house. These were often round or half-round and could be found in the upper rooms of the home.

No matter what form or design of stained glass you choose, you’ll feel the warmth of it all the time.

Combine With Antique Quilts

You might think quilts and stained glass windows don't have much to do with each other -- and in most average homes they don't. Maybe that's why they're average.

If you want to have a home that's beautiful, unique and for sure not average, consider making use of the combination of a stained glass window and an antique quilt. You can use one or more of each in the same room.

This opens up a world of decorating ideas. Although this concept is almost always applied to country and traditional homes, in a contemporary home, these antique items would contribute to an eclectic decore.
