Aluminum Storm Windows
Aluminum storm windows are a low cost and energy saving choice for homeowners. The energy lost through windows is cut by 50% by installing storm windows. These windows work by limiting the amount of air that escapes or enters a structure during the winter and summer thus reducing heating and cooling bills.
The typical aluminum "triple-track" — so called because it holds two glass sashes and one screen that slide up and down on separate tracks — won't win any beauty contests, but it can play an important preservation role by protecting your wooden windows from the elements.
Aluminum is a light-weight, rigid material which is easy and cheap to manufacture in several shapes and sizes. It is perfect for holding the glass in place while also making the weight of the panel manageable.
Most storm windows are weather resistant making them virtually maintenance free. With aluminum, there is no warping or rotting and painting is not necessary.
A mill finish (plain aluminum) will oxidize, reducing ease of operation and degrading appearance. An anodized or baked enamel finish is better. Extruded vinyl is also available, and when properly designed vinyl works fine.
A storm window adds security by creating an additional barrier to existing windows. Since storm windows are very tightly fitted it is hard to pry them open.
Advantages of aluminum storm windows include:
• They provide energy savings.
• They are affordable.
• They are easy to clean.
• They are durable.
• They give ultra Violet (UV) protection.
• They reduce sun glare.
• They increase security.
One disadvantage of aluminum windows is that (more than vinyl or wood) they conduct both hot and cold temperatures. Frost can easily form at the aluminum joints on the inside of the storm windows.
